Transforming Ireland - Mobilising Innovation and Enterprise to Become a Prosperous Low Carbon Society
Ireland is almost unique amongst developed nations in terms of our greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions profile with Agriculture being a major contributor to our total GHG profile, partly due to our high ruminant (cattle and sheep) population. Ruminants are characterised by their ability to digest structural carbohydrates which cannot by utilised by humans, due to the microbial population residing in the digestive tract. One of the by-products of this digestion is 'enteric methane' which is a potent GHG and contributes 13% of Ireland's total GHG emissions. Given the key role Agriculture plays in the Irish economy and export portfolio this offers great challenges and opportunities to Irish to comply with Kyoto and EU targets and provide a model for action at global level.
The seminar will be chaired by Matthew Dempsey, Editor and Chief Executive, Irish Farmers Journal
This seminar series is being held in conjunction with the TCD-UCD Innovation Alliance Public Lecture Series.
