Science Gallery is thrilled to welcome Robert Winston, Professor of Science and Society and Emeritus Professor of Fertility Studies at Imperial College, London. Professor Winston believes that public engagement with science is vital. Scientific knowledge has huge promise but its possible misuse means that it is important that society has adequate control of what is done in its name.
In his new and timely book - Bad Ideas?, Professor Winston takes a fresh look at man's greatest discoveries and innovations and asks whether our dependence on science and technology has led us into a precarious situation which is doomed to become worse before it gets better? As well as tracing the history and fall-out of our very worst ideas, this book also advocates the merits of scientific progress
Professor Winston has an international reputation for his researches into human reproduction and has pioneered advances widely used in fertility and IVF treatment. He is committed to scientific education and regularly writes or hosts popular science programmes for the BBC, Discovery and ABC networks. His many television series on different aspects of science have been shown around the globe. Perhaps the best known is 'The Human Body' which won a record of three BAFTAs, an Emmy nomination and a Peabody award. His publications include: 'What Makes Me Me', 'The Human Mind', 'Human' and most recently 'Bad Ideas?: An Arresting History of Our Inventions: How Our Finest Inventions Nearly Finished Us Off'.
As a member of the House of Lords he regularly speaks in parliament on science, medicine, education and the arts. As well as his research at Imperial College London, he is Chairman of the Royal College of Music and Chancellor of Sheffield Hallam University.
