Tuesday, 27th April – Water, Food Security and Climate Change; the Global Challenge
This first seminar in the ‘Climate Justice Seminar Series’ will be presented by Professor Cees
Veerman, former Dutch Minister for Agriculture, Nature Management and Fisheries and Professor at
Tilburg and Wageningen Universities
This lecture will examine the ways in which climate, water and food security are interconnected. It will deal with the controversy surrounding the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Report and the verification mission of the Chairperson of Netherlands Academy of Sciences. It will also explore the impacts of climate change on food and feed production and the impacts of increasing water shortages. While new energy resources are coming on stream there are also limitations to the development of these. Risk increasingly structures human interactions with the environment and new scarcities will be created by climate change.
The global population and the high agricultural productivity regions are concentrated in low lying areas, yet it is these areas which are most vulnerable to sea-level rise. Adapting to and mitigating the effects of climate change should follow the precautionary principle and emphasize safety first. Given its extreme vulnerability to sea level change planning for climate change is advanced in Holland. In that context the new Dutch “Delta plan” will be discussed.
This seminar series is being held in conjunction with the TCD-UCD Innovation Alliance Public Lecture Series.
