Globe Forum –  Early Stage Researchers Challenge

Six Early Stage Researchers will battle it out for the title ‘Ireland’s Researcher’ at the Globe Forum Dublin 2010 conference on Wednesday 17 November at 3.35pm. They will have one minute to pitch their case as to why their research can make a real difference with implications for science, sustainability and society. The audience and onstage judging panel will be asked to vote on which innovative research they find most promising.

The six shortlisted Researchers include projects from Trinity, UCD, DCU and UL.  The finalists and their research topics are as follows:  

• Aimee Byrne, Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, TCD  - Policy, regulation and incentives for sustainable cities: A case study of energy efficiency regimes for Dublin housing
• David Connolly, Physics, University of Limerick – The integration of fluctuating renewable energy using energy storage
• Aiden Doherty, CLARITY: Centre for Sensor Web Technologies, School of Computing, DCU - Smart Cushion - Ambient Feedback of Domestic Electricity Consumption
• Paul Doherty, Civil Engineering, UCD - Optimising Foundation Systems for Offshore Wind Turbines
• Ivana Dusparic, School of Computer Science and Statistics, TCD - REALT – Real-time Adaptive Learning-based Traffic Control
• Anthony Schoofs, Clarity Centre for Sensor Web Technologies, UCD - Real-time electricity monitoring in buildings

The Research prize includes an exclusive membership in Globe Forum’s facilitator programme for one year, €600 (IRCSET) and a mentoring programme from Accenture.  All of the shortlisted finalists will receive an iPad from IRCSET. 

Globe Forum Dublin 2010 is the flagship conference in Dublin’s Innovation Festival. More than just a Conference, it will focus on Smarter and Greener – Innovation for a Sustainable Future. Irish and International innovators, investors, researchers and leaders from Government, cities, business, research communities and education will take part.  The event will offer sessions focusing on developing market-leading innovation, while acting as a marketplace where innovators and investors can connect by actively encouraging investment in emerging enterprises, providing professional support for innovators, encouraging new methods of funding innovation.

Dublin City Council have played a pivotal role in bringing this Global Innovation Event to Dublin and the event is supported by the Dept of Communications & Natural Resources, Accenture, IRCSET, TCD-UCD Innovation Alliance, IDAIreland, Enterprise Ireland, SFI, SEAI. Cities from around the Globe will be present and will show how innovation has worked to solve transport, health and other challenges. The event will have the active participation of many leading members of the Irish Diaspora.
